Most local hotels or holiday apartments offer their guests the KONUS Guest Card which allows you to ride regional trains and buses for free. Some of the railway routes are also very interesting and scenic. Generally speaking, the more touristy an area, the better the public transport is. Bikes and dogs are usually permitted on the trains, and some buses even have trailers for bikes. Getting Thereįrom Stuttgart, it is easy to reach the Black Forest by car using the surrounding highways: the A8 (Stuttgart-Karlsruhe), A81 (Stuttgart-Singen) and A5 (Karlsruhe-Basel). As you explore the region, you will find mostly small towns and villages or even just farmhouses standing alone. In comparison to other places in Germany, the Black Forest has much lower population density. The South is higher on average, but it has gentler slopes and is sheltered by the Vosges (a low mountain range along the border with France), which makes it drier. The terrain is characterized by steep changes in elevation and narrow valleys. The North is covered with dense forests thanks to high levels of rain, but it is also exposed to western winds. It is an area about 120 km (75 mi) long and 60 km (37 mi) wide with two distinct parts characterized by different weather patterns. The Hornisgrinde is the highest peak in the northern Black Forest at 1,164 meters above sea level (3,818 feet). Climbing through the Bühlerhöhe, it arrives at the Hornisgrinde. It runs through the mountains at an altitude of 800 (2,650 feet) to 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) on the B500. It starts in Baden-Baden, Germany’s famous health resort, and ends 65 km further on in Freudenstadt. The Black Forest Ridge Route, a scenic route, offers many beautiful views over the Rhine plain to the Vosges mountains. It reveals a variety of landscapes on its heights: in the north, spruce trees line steep roads, creating a sometimes mysterious atmosphere in the center, the vineyards of the hillsides give way to pastures and rich farmhouses in the south, lakes alternate with high peaks. You will cross a mountainous massif, with small traditional villages as stages. The ribbon of asphalt that unfolds before you is of perfect quality and the road is very wide. The road runs for about 65 kilometers (40 miles), between majestic spaces and panoramas, ending in Freudenstadt, a climatic resort founded in the 16th century.
